5.4. Installing SpinServer Software

This chapter describes the initialization process for the SpinServer. Before initializing the SpinServer, ensure that all hardware components are installed as documented in the Quick Start Guide and Installation Guide.

The CLI SpinManager is used in the command examples in this guide. The GUI SpinManager has the same commands in the same command hierarchy.

Important: It is not recommended that the SpinServer Reset button be used to restart the SpinServer at any time because this shutdown method does not provide the system with the time necessary to properly save all data.

5.1. Ethernet Ports

A SpinServer has six Ethernet connections, which are identified in the following table.

Table 5-1. SpinServer Ethernet Connections

Ethernet Port Name
mgmt0 Management port
mgmt1 Management port (not used)
serv0 Server port one
serv1 Server port two (optional)
clus0 Cluster port one
clus1 Cluster port two (optional)

A network virtual interface is associated with a network port and is assigned an IP address. A network port can be configured with one or more network virtual interfaces with IP addresses and additional failover interfaces.

5.2. Installation and Configuration Tasks for the SpinServer

Before installing SpinServer software, you must obtain configuration information from your network administrator. Use the following table to enter the information that is needed during the installation process.

Table 5-2. SpinServer Configuration Information

SpinServer ID
Management IP address (if not using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP))
Management netmask (if not using DHCP)
Management default gateway IP (if not using DHCP)
Management primary name server (if not using DHCP)
Server IP address 1
Server netmask 1
Cluster IP address 1
Cluster IP address 2 (optional)
Cluster netmask
Cluster broadcast

Important: You enter the SpinServer ID at the time you initially install the software. The SpinServer ID can be an IP address (for example, 10.1.1.14) or a name (for example, Server1). The name or ID of the SpinServer is propagated from that initial installation of the software into the SpinManager management framework. To prevent confusion and potential loss or misplacement of data, the SpinServer IDs you choose must be orderly and easily recognizable by all system administrators who maintain your SpinServer system. Any naming system can be chosen for your system, but the IDs for the SpinServers must be unique within a cluster. After the ID for a SpinServer has been set, you cannot modify the server name or ID or host name. To do so invalidates the failover port designation for the SpinServer and can result in the loss of data.

Note: To assure that all system components work together properly, one cluster port must be configured even if only a single SpinServer is being installed. Even if you intend to use only one of the cluster ports, it is highly recommended that you configure both cluster ports at initial installation of the software.

The serial number of a SpinServer is stored internally. During the installation of the SpinServer software, the SpinServer automatically restarts. At that time, the serial number is populated into the management framework.

You can use the spinservers modify command to further identify the SpinServer by entering this additional information: owner, contact information, asset tag, and location of the SpinServer. For additional information about this command, see Section 20.2.2 .

5.3. Checking System Component Connectivity

Before installing the SpinServer software, ensure that all hardware has been correctly set up and cabled, as described in the Installation Guide. Check all cables and cords for the proper physical connections. The software installation and configuration procedures require the following connectivity and configuration.

5.4. Installing SpinServer Software

For the initial installation of the SpinFS software, perform the following the procedures.

Important: When you enter the SpinServer ID at the time you initially install the software, the SpinServer ID can be an IP address (for example, 10.1.1.14) or a name (for the examples used in this document, Server1).

Note: If you are configuring the SpinServer statically, you must enter the IP addresses manually and you need to have the following information available before you begin the software installation process. Obtain this information from your network administrator.

  • Management port IP address

  • Netmask

  • Default gateway IP address

  • Primary name server IP address

Note: All software installation output is directed to the serial console. No software installation output is visible on a VGA console.

  1. If the SpinServer is on, power it down by pressing and holding the power button until the LEDs on the front panel power supply units turn red. (This takes about five seconds.)

  2. When the SpinServer is off, press and release the power button one time to power up the SpinServer. During this process, place the software CD into the CD drive. From the serial console, you can monitor the initialization processes.

Note: Ensure that the CD is in place before the SpinServer searches for the drives from which to boot.

  3. The Welcome screen displays the End User License Agreement.

Figure 5-1. The Welcome screen for SpinFS software installation

  4. To continue reading the End User License Agreement, page through the the screens by following the instructions at the bottom of each screen (for example, to read the second End User License Agreement screen, press Ctrl-F 2).

  5. After the final End User License Agreement screen, the following screen is displayed. Type install and press Enter to continue the installation process.

    Figure 5-2. The installation prompt

  6. As the initialization continues, on-screen messages indicate that the system is creating RAID sets, formatting file systems, installing software packages, and completing other procedures for configuring the system. The following figures show two example messages.

Figure 5-3. An example creation message

Figure 5-4. An example package-installation message

  7. The SpinServer automatically restarts, as shown in the following figure, and ejects the CD. Remove the CD from the drive.

    Caution:

The software CD must be removed from the CD drive. If the SpinServer loses power and the CD is in the drive, the SpinServer installation process can restart when power to the SpinServer is restored. If installation of the software is restarted and completed, all data that is stored on the SpinServer is lost.

Figure 5-5. The SpinServer automatically restarts after the software installation.

  8. Enter the clock settings into the system as shown in the following figure. Select the settings for your region and tab to OK, then press the space bar.

Note: The default setting for the hardware clock is GMT. Do not change this setting.

Figure 5-6. The hardware clock setting.

  9. The initialization process prompts you for the name or ID of the SpinServer, as shown in the following figure. After you enter the SpinServer ID into the Hostname field, tab to the OK box and press the space bar.

Note: For the examples given in this chapter, the SpinServer ID is Server1.

Figure 5-7. Enter the SpinServer ID in the Hostname field.

  10. After entering the SpinServer ID, configure the management port for the SpinServer. If the management port is to be configured by using DHCP, tab to OK and press the space bar. If you are manually entering the network configuration information, complete the fields with the configuration information provided by your network administrator. When finished, tab to OK and press the space bar.

Figure 5-8. Select DHCP or enter IP addresses manually.

  11. When the installation of the SpinFS software is complete, the SpinServer presents the login prompt. At the login prompt, type admin. At the Password prompt, type admin.

    Figure 5-9. The login prompt

  12. Your system is now ready for configuration, as shown in the following figure.

Figure 5-10. The SpinServer prompt after login

Note: The SpinServer shows local disk activity for several minutes as it mirrors the SCSI drives. This is normal behavior and does not interfere with the configuration or operation of the SpinServer system components.

5.4.1. Changing the Login Password

After initial installation of the SpinFS software on the SpinServer, you can change the user password by performing the following steps:

  1. Log in as root by using secure shell (SSH).

  2. Enter the new password by using the passwd command (for example, passwd admin).

  3. Enter the password a second time to confirm the password.

5.4.2. Changing the Root Password

After initial installation of the SpinFS software on your SpinServer, you can change the root password by performing the following steps:

  1. Log in as root by using secure shell (SSH).

  2. Enter the new password by using the passwd command (for example, passwd root).

  3. Enter the password a second time to confirm the password.

5.4.3. Installing Software Upgrades

To install SpinFS software upgrades, see the Release Notes for installation instructions.
